Momigami & Junk Journal Decorating Experience in our Blended Monkey Studios - August 2025

This afternoon's momigami and junk journal decorating experience taught by our guest tutor Zakiya - bookbinder & junk journal artist from Fanoggins - was a very relaxed and creative affair. The lovely group of students learnt the interesting art of momigami, the Japanese technique of "paper kneading" where you can turn paper into fabric-like medium.
The first part of this half-day experience focussed on making the momigami papers. This very mindful and relaxing technique slowly turns rigid paper into a soft "fabric".
The group then enjoyed using their unique materials to cover the journals which Zakiya had provided. They were also able to use other embellishments, stickers and make envelopes too!
Each of the students created their own individual covers, as you can see from the photos & video below.
The students were fuelled with lovely home-baked coconut biscuits and chocolate brownies (also made by Zakiya).
The wonderful thing about any of Zakiya's journal-making or decorating workshops is that you can continue to fill your journal over the next months - or even years. Your journal could be themed or simply a collection of pretty inserts, envelopes, thoughts, poetry ... you can stitch in it, glue in it, rip bits up, paint in it, add stickers or memorabilia, photos, drawings ...
This was a fab, relaxing experience. It's such a therapeutic craft!
Zakiya is joining us again here in the Blended Monkey Studios on Saturday 6 December for a full-day creative Fabric Bound Junk Journal experience where you learn how to choose papers and stitch together your "signatures" to create your very own journal which you then go on to cover in fabric.
