Completed fabric bound journal

Fabric Bound Junk Journal Workshop | Blended Monkey Studios | Sunday 26 Sept

£80.00Price

Sunday 26 September - 9.45 - 4.00 pm - Blended Monkey Studios - PE14 9BG

Suitable for 14+ accompanied by an adult.

Join Zakiya, our guest tutor from Fanoggins, for a JUNK JOURNALLING workshop where you'll learn how to use a 3-hole pamphlet stitch to create a 4-signature hardbacked journal with a beautiful fabric spine.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and perfect for those who have already created a spiral-bound journal and want to enhance their work with stitching. This sits between spiral binding and coptic binding (which we'll be offering soon).

Junk journalling is an extremely varied craft involving techniques from a range of disciplines. However, this workshop focuses on some extra skills to elevate your junk journalling work:

  • pamphlet stitching
  • heat embossing
  • sewing
  • collaging
  • using liquid pearls

The whole procedure will be explained from start to finish by Zakiya in a small-group workshop, enabling all the techniques and processes to be seen up close.

The session will start with a brief introduction about the craft and the plans for the day.

You'll choose your own papers to use in your 4 signatures. Zakiya will then demonstrate how to stitch your signatures (pages) before they are glued and put in a press in order to apply pressure while they dry.

You'll then concentrate on making your journal's front and back covers.

By this point, you may be feeling a tad peckish, so we'll head over to the Blended Monkey kitchen for a lovely lunch.

In the afternoon, Zakiya will demonstrate the technique of heat embossing where you'll understand how to use embossing powders and a heat gun to create some lovely adornments.

You'll also be able to use washi tapes, ephemera, pockets, stamping, bands, stickers  ... to decorate your inside pages.

At the end of the session, you'll take your newly created hardbacked (stitched spine with fabric covering) journal home where you can continue to add to it if you wish.

We’ll supply everything you need to craft your junk journal, but you’re welcome to bring your own photographs, magazines, old books, drawings and ephemera to use in your journal. You can also bring your own fabric for the spine if you prefer.

"I am passionate about the art of junk journal making, book binding and making my own unique papers. I enjoy teaching my craft in the form of small-group workshops, so others can learn how to make and bind beautiful paper journals, and employ techniques such as embossing, signature stitching, momigami ... and I love teaching the fabulously creative art of paper making.

Fanoggins is all about books (currently) - junk journals and rebound novels, to be exact. I create them so you can use them for whatever your heart desires. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, plans, dreams, shopping lists, habit trackers, you name it; my one-of-a-kind, handbound journals serve as their ideal home."
