Stone Carving - Roman Letters - Experience at the Blended Monkey Studios - July 2025

Yesterday, we welcomed our guest tutor and stone mason, Mark Evans, back to the Blended Monkey Studios & Gardens for another very successful stone carving workshop. This experience focused on carving Roman letters into Portland stone.

The students created some very lovely letters in this 1-day course & we're so pleased that they enjoyed the session.

Each student was able to create a letter of their choosing. After an introduction from Mark, and Simon and I setting everyone up with teas, coffees and yummy brownies (courtesy of Fanoggins Bakery), everyone learnt how to draw their letter design onto their very substantial piece of stone.

Mark provided stone to practice on and soon everyone was getting to grips with how to use the special chisels and hammers to carve out their letters.

I dipped in and out to take photos (of course) and there's something incredibly relaxing about the sound of the tippy tapping of the chisels into stone (see the video below).

The day included a lovely lunch with lots of home-baked elements and plenty of choice.
