This full-day group workshop with our guest artist Chris Grant from ThisBrokenArt, is suitable for all skill levels - and no drawing or lettering experience required.
 
Transform reclaimed timber into a unique rustic graffiti sign that's entirely your own.
 
Using weathered wood as your canvas, you’ll learn a range of creative techniques including painting, distressing, patina, sanding, ageing and hand-drawn graffiti lettering to create a piece full of character and individuality.
No previous experience is needed, and with plenty of one-to-one guidance throughout the day, this workshop is suitable for all skill levels.
 
One of the things that makes this experience different is that no two signs will ever be the same. Rather than following a fixed design, you’ll make creative choices throughout the day, allowing you to create a sign that reflects your own style and personality.
 
Before the workshop, you’ll simply choose words, names, numbers or short phrase that you’d like to feature on your sign. Chris will prepare your chosen wording in a selection of hand-drawn graffiti lettering styles for you to choose from on the day, giving you the freedom to select the style that best suits your project.
 
Throughout the workshop you’ll have the opportunity to:
 
- Choose your reclaimed timber and build your sign.
- Experiment with paint, colour and layered finishes.
- Create an authentic weathered look using sanding and distressing techniques.
- Add optional ageing effects and decorative details to make your sign truly unique.
- Choose from a selection of hand-drawn graffiti lettering styles prepared especially for your chosen word or phrase.
- Learn how to draw, paint and finish your lettering with confidence.
- Complete your sign ready to hang at home using your choice of rope, leather or concealed picture fixings.
 
You’ll also have access to Chris’s ever-growing ‘Salvage Crate’ - a collection of reclaimed and vintage materials gathered over many years. From interesting hardware and decorative pieces to unusual odds and ends, you’re welcome to explore the collection and use anything that inspires you to personalise your artwork. At the end of the day you'll take home a completely original handmade sign created by you and unlike no other.
 
With a maximum of just eight participants, there’ll be plenty of opportunity for individual tuition and guidance throughout the day, ensuring everyone leaves with a finished piece they can be proud of.
 
This FULL DAY GRAFFITI SIGN WORKSHOP will be held in the peaceful setting of our Blended Monkey Studios & Gardens (in our dedicated outdoor covered workspace) on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk border. 
 
Numbers are limited to ensure you get plenty of 1-2-1 tuition. 
 
This experience is suitable for 16+. 
 
Wear old clothes or bring an apron to protect yourself.
 
About a week before your workshop date, we'll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day and also a lovely lunch - tailored to meet all dietary requirements.

The full-day workshop includes:

    • The purchaser of the workshop may cancel the workshop up to 2 weeks before the workshop date with a full refund.

    • If we need to cancel a workshop at short notice for reasons beyond our control, such as illness or mechanical breakdowns, the first option is to rearrange a mutually convenient date or receive a refund. In the event of cancellation for any reason, we are unable to reimburse travel, accommodation or any other expenses that you may incur in relation to the cancelled course.

    "I am the artist behind ThisBrokenArt. Where forgotten objects are given a new story through creativity, craftsmanship and imagination. Working with reclaimed timber, vintage finds and salvaged materials, I create original one-of-a-kind artwork that blends rustic finishes, contemporary graffiti, and street art with a deep appreciation for history, character, and individuality.

    Inspired by music, industrial heritage, Americana and the beauty of weathered materials, my work is driven by the belief that every object carries a story. Rather than restoring pieces to their original condition, I prefer to embrace their imperfections, allowing every mark, scratch, and layer of age to become part of a new creative journey. The result is artwork that feels authentic, lived-in, and impossible to replicate.

    At the heart of ThisBrokenArt is the simple belief that nothing is ever truly finished or forgotten. With creativity, imagination, and a willingness to see potential where others do not, even the most overlooked objects can become something extraordinary.

    My creative process combines colour, texture, layering, and hand-drawn graffiti lettering with traditional workshop techniques such as distressing, sanding, and ageing. Every piece evolves differently, reflecting the personality of both the material and the maker.

    This philosophy extends naturally into my workshops. Rather than asking everyone to create the same project, I encourage participants to make their own creative decisions throughout the day, guiding them with practical techniques and years of artistic experience while leaving plenty of room for individuality and experimentation. Whether someone is picking up a paintbrush for the first time or already enjoys making art, the aim is always the same: to leave with something unique, something personal and, above all, something they are genuinely proud to say they created themselves.

    Through ThisBrokenArt, I hope to inspire people to look differently at the world around them—to see beauty in the overlooked, value in the weathered, and endless creative possibilities in the things that others might simply throw away.

    My work can regularly be found at festivals, exhibitions, and creative events across the UK, where live demonstrations and conversations with visitors form an important part of the ThisBrokenArt experience."
