PIN CUSHION or NEEDLE CASE SEWING WORKSHOP

    Sunday 28 September 9.45 am – 1.00 pm

£35 including refreshments, materials, use of equipment on the day, tutoring & certificate of completion.

This half-day group workshop with our guest tutor, Alison Pritchard, is suitable for all skill levels.

You will learn the basics of English Paper Piecing, a traditional hand patch working method. We will cover templates, fabrics, threads and different joining techniques that will help you get started with this relaxing process.

We will be making either a pin cushion or a needle case. There are two pin cushion choices, one of them takes a little longer to complete. The needle case is probably the most technically difficult, due to the very small pieces. I will help you to make the right choice for you in the time we have available.

These items use the traditional hexagon in a variety of sizes. There will be plenty of  fabric options to choose from, or you can bring your own fabric to try. Cotton and poly cotton are perfect for small projects like this (try to avoid any fabrics with stretch or bulk, like velvet, corduroy etc.).

Wadding for the pin cushions, and blank needle case/pin cushions will be available to attach your finished hexies to.

We will be using big stitch applique to attach the elements to the blanks, but there will be hot glue and iron-on options if needed. (These are temporary fixes, as sewing will make everything secure).

Paper templates, trim, wadding, embroidery thread/needles will be available, along with the pre-made blanks.

A simple sewing kit will be provided, containing pins, sewing needles and neutral sewing thread.

There will be additional equipment available to use and a small iron for basic pressing once the piece is finished.

This PIN CUSHION/NEEDLE CASE SEWING WORKSHOP will be held in the peaceful setting of our Blended Monkey studios on the Cambs/Norfolk border.

Numbers are limited to ensure you get plenty of 1-2-1 tuition.

This relaxing workshop is suitable for 16+.

About a week before your workshop date, we'll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc.

    • Meet our Guest Tutor

"I've been a textile artist for over 30 years, with a range of experience in many different techniques.

I started with cross-stitch, moved into patchwork and quilting, and am now an accomplished quilter with a particular passion for free-motion machine work over hand sewn elements.

I love the mindfulness of hand sewing, particularly traditional techniques like embroidery, slow stitching and applique. English Paper Piecing is a great foundation for those looking to get into more traditional styles of sewing.

I love to combine these traditional processes with more modern designs, and sharing my knowledge helps to inspire new ideas and spark that passion in others."
