PAPER & SCARF MARBLING WORKSHOP

Sunday 23 August 9.45 am – 4.00 pm

£140 including refreshments, lunch, materials, use of equipment on the day, tutoring, comprehensive notes to take home along with your marbled papers, certificate of achievement.

This full-day group workshop with our guest tutor, Anne Hickley, is suitable for all skill levels.

You will learn the basics of the ancient art of marbling on paper,
which can be traced back to 14th century Persia, and marble one long (35 cm x 130 cm) silk scarf.

Marbling is a ‘mono-printing’ process where paints or inks are floated on ‘thickened water’ and then the paper is laid on top to pull the print.

We will concentrate on the ‘Western’ version, familiar to many people from old book endpapers, using combs and rakes to make patterns, but also take a brief look at the more modern Turkish ‘Ebru’ – making pictures on the ‘thickened water’.

We will be using acrylic paints. Every marbled print is unique, as it depends on exactly how the paint floats, swirls and is manipulated on the thickened water, and how the paper is laid down before the print is pulled.

You will choose the colours you want to use and learn to make several different patterns.

At the end of the day you will take home several A4 marbled papers, a silk scarf, and detailed instructions for anyone who wants to carry on this fun craft.

Anne will bring examples of her work to inspire you.

"I have been crafting since I could pick up a paintbrush
and remember my mother teaching me to sew running-stitch pictures at around four years old.

I have been marbling for about six years now and started my marbling business, Marbled Beauty, named after a British moth, during lockdown, in case my other business slowed down.

It didn’t – I'm now very busy, but enjoying the challenge. I mostly marble silk and leather, making small items for sale in local
galleries and online at www.marbledbeauty.co.uk, and teach workshops on marbling for beginners."
