2-PERSON PRIVATE GLASS LAMPWORKING EXPERIENCE - CREATE YOUR OWN BEAUTIFUL BEADS

Date to Suit

£370 including refreshments throughout & lunch (catering to all dietary requirements), materials, use of equipment on the day, tutoring & certificate of completion.

In this one-day private lampworking experience you will learn the basic technique of bead making by winding coloured glass from rods onto a stainless steel mandrel over a hot flame.

During the course of the experience, you'll progress from small single-coloured beads to decorated beads - with the aim that by the end of the experience you will have made at least one large bead using different coloured glass and several smaller single or dual-coloured beads.

You will learn how some glasses react with one another to produce different effects.

The morning session will cover basic bead making and decorating techniques allowing you to experiment independently in the afternoon - this could include some encasing or playing with glass frits.

Time will fly by!

"I grew up in Belfast, in a family where creativity was very much encouraged whether it be painting, photography, writing or crafts.

I actually studied music initially but later trained as a gardener and still enjoy both of these.

When I first moved to Ely, 14 years ago, I did a glass leading workshop at the cathedral and realised just what a wonderful medium glass is. From there I explored copper foiling and eventually glass fusing, buying my first kiln in 2014.

By chance, I was invited to attend a weekend lampworking course and was immediately smitten. Lampworking tuition was hard to come by and I travelled long distances to get the opportunity to access equipment and learn more. Eventually I was able to set up my own workshop space (in the garage!) and have since attended workshops with some amazing bead makers.

I get as much pleasure out of making one beautiful glass bead as I do out of making a whole necklaceful!

More recently I have been developing my silversmithing skills so that I can make findings that complement my statement bead jewellery.

I take part in Cambridge Open Studios (in Ely) every July and love the opportunity to exhibit with other artists.

To me, lampworking is about playing with the endless possibilities of shape, colour and texture that you can only get with glass. Much of the glass I use still comes from Murano in Venice so I feel as though I am carrying on a very ancient art.

I love teaching and it never ceases to amaze me to see what can be achieved in a short space of time."
