Join Zakiya, our guest tutor from Fanoggins, for a COPTIC  BOOKBINDING & BOOK MAKING experience.

Zakiya, our guest tutor bookbinder and junk journal artist from Fanoggins, will guide you through the process from start to finish, ensuring you come away with a beautiful six-signature hardback book by the end of the day.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and perfect for those who have already created a simple stitched signature journal or even the spiral-bound journal and want to enhance their work with stitching.

You will learn how to:

  • prepare signatures ready for binding
  • cover book board in book cloth for a professional finish
  • measure the correct thread length for coptic binding
  • coptic bind using a curved needle and waxed linen thread

The whole procedure will be explained from start to finish by Zakiya in a small-group workshop, enabling all the techniques and processes to be seen up close.

You'll pick everything from the thread colour to the paper type to the book cloth colour, ensuring your finished book is unique to you.

Originating in North Africa in the second century AD, coptic binding is an ancient technique that has stood the gruelling test of time. And you’ll be learning this traditional binding method in this full-day workshop.

We’ll supply everything you need to craft your own coptic-bound book.

"I am passionate about the art of junk journal making, book binding and making my own unique papers. I enjoy teaching my craft in the form of small-group workshops, so others can learn how to make and bind beautiful paper journals, and employ techniques such as embossing, signature stitching, momigami ... and I love teaching the fabulously creative art of paper making.

Fanoggins is all about books (currently) - junk journals and rebound novels, to be exact. I create them so you can use them for whatever your heart desires. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, plans, dreams, shopping lists, habit trackers, you name it; my one-of-a-kind, handbound journals serve as their ideal home."
