GREEN WOODWORKING INTERACTIVE DEMONSTRATION AT THE ELY GUILD OF WOODTURNERS - October 2023

It was nice to be asked by my local woodturning club, the Ely Guild of Woodturners, to demonstrate green woodworking to the members.

The members of most woodturning clubs and groups are usually made up of machine lathe turners with very few ever dabbling with pole lathes and green woodworking, so it was great to introduce them to the wonders and joys of green woodwork.

I demonstrated how to take a log of green wood with its bark on and use an axe to rough it down ready for the next stage where the log is taken to the shave horse and a draw knife is used to further shape the log into a round in readiness for the pole lathe.

The pole lathe is often the star of the show, and I encouraged members of the group to come and have a go at turning the log using their own leg power on the pole lathe - slightly different to using a machine lathe, but ultimately satisfying.

It was a good evening..
