Rustic Graffiti Sign Workshop at the Blended Monkey Studios - September 2026
Today, our small but perfectly formed group of students enjoyed the first Rustic Graffiti Sign workshop we've held here in the Blended Monkey Studios and Gardens.
Our guest tutor, graffiti artist & "upcycler", Chris from ThisBrokenArt, showed everyone how to create their own entirely unique sign from scratch.
The students chose their wood from a great selection provided by Chris. They went on to
saw up the wood to make the right size of sign
screw it together using braces at the back
use the orbital sander to smooth the face of the sign
experiment with distressing and ageing techniques using a blowtorch
provide spray paint to colour the background
use further ageing techniques
trace on their chosen lettering in their chosen font (prepared by Chris)
use pens to colour in their lettering and provide shade and highlights
have a good rummage through the wealth of embellishments and salvaged bits and bobs in order to further personalise their signs
learn how to treat their work so it's ready to be used outside
We kept the refreshments flowing in the form of various drinks, home-baked chocolate brownies & shortbread, and we also served a lovely lunch - you've got to keep that creativity fuelled!
Simba was on hand throughout the day to check that work was progressing as it should :-). He loves to be involved!
